Hitachi's Multi-Split Systems (also known as Multi-split air conditioners) are currently the optimal air conditioning solution for apartments, townhouses, and small commercial buildings. With the outstanding advantage of one outdoor unit connecting to multiple indoor units (up to 5 indoor units), this system optimizes balcony space, saves area, and ensures high aesthetic appeal for the home. However, due to the more complex integrated piping system compared to conventional split systems, installing a Multi-split air conditioner requires an extremely strict technical procedure. This article by U.P TECH will provide detailed instructions on the installation process of a Hitachi Multi-Split air conditioning system according to official standards.
1. Preparation steps before installing Multi-Split Air Conditioning Systems
Before proceeding, technicians need to survey the existing condition of the structure and prepare all necessary materials such as: copper pipes, insulation, power cables, signal cables, condensate drain pipes, and specialized installation equipment (vacuum pump, pressure gauge, pipe flaring machine).
Important technical notes from Hitachi:
- The indoor unit should be installed in a location that complements the interior design and ensures even airflow throughout the room.
- The outdoor unit should be placed in a well-ventilated location with good heat dissipation to avoid air recirculation, which reduces cooling efficiency.
- The total pipe length and height difference between the outdoor and indoor units must not exceed the manufacturer's allowed limits (for example, the maximum total pipe length for the RAM-SJ42H5NV model is 75m).

2. Standard technical installation procedure for Hitachi Multi-Split Systems air conditioners
Step 1: Install the indoor units
The Multi – Split Systems Hitachi's products allow for diverse connections between different types of indoor units, such as wall-mounted units and ducted ceiling-mounted units.
- For wall-mounted air conditioners: Use a spirit level to position the mounting bracket to prevent the machine from tilting and causing backflow. Create a sloping hole through the wall to thread the pipe through.
- For ducted ceiling-mounted air conditioners: Accurately determine the position of the ceiling suspension rods. Ensure there is sufficient ceiling space to install the unit and connect the air duct box and the integrated Hitachi condensate pump.
Step 2: Install copper pipes, electrical wires, and condensate drain pipes
- Connecting copper pipes: Cut the pipe with a specialized cutter and scrape off any burrs. Then, flare the copper pipe using a standard tool to create a smooth, tight-fitting contact surface with the indoor unit's connector.
- Thermal insulation wrapping: Use high-quality insulation, wrapping each gas pipe (inlet and outlet) separately to prevent condensation and dripping that could damage the plaster ceiling.
- Thread the signal and power cables: Thread the electrical wires through the copper conduit. Ensure the wire cross-section conforms to Hitachi's technical specifications to withstand the machine's startup and operation.
Step 3: Install the outdoor unit
Mount the outdoor unit on a sturdy wall bracket or a flat concrete base with rubber damping pads to eliminate vibration and ensure smooth system operation.
Because Hitachi's outdoor unit uses advanced Cascade Vector DC Inverter technology and its heat exchanger fins are coated with Anti-Corrosion Green Fin, placing it in a well-ventilated location will help maximize its lifespan.
Step 4: Connect the pipes to the outdoor unit
Multi – Split Systems are multiple connectors corresponding to each individual indoor unit. Technicians need to accurately mark the gas pipe and signal wire pairs for each room (Room A, Room B,...) to avoid incorrect connections between one indoor unit and the control unit of another indoor unit on the outdoor unit.

3. Technical and system inspection procedures
This is an extremely important step for central air conditioning or multi-split air conditioning systems to ensure the machine operates reliably and does not leak refrigerant (R410A gas).
- Leak test (Nitrogen compression): Compress nitrogen gas into the piping system at the manufacturer's standard pressure to check all welds and flared fittings for leaks.
- Vacuuming: Use a specialized vacuum pump to deeply vacuum the system to achieve a minimum vacuum level of below 500 microns. Absolutely do not use gas to expel air.
- Drain the gas and refill it (if necessary): Open the hexagonal valve on the outdoor unit to release the refrigerant into the system. If the actual total pipe length exceeds the available rated length of the outdoor unit, it is necessary to calculate and add refrigerant accurately using an electronic scale.

4. Install and test the airCloud Go application
After completing the electromechanical work, power on the system and run a test for at least 30 minutes.
Check the operating current, gas pressure, and inlet/outlet air temperature of each indoor unit.
Check the condensate drainage system, whether it flows naturally or via a condensate drain pump, to ensure it is functioning properly.
airCloud Go: Hitachi integrates smart management technology that allows you to control your air conditioner via your phone. Technicians assist with Wi-Fi connectivity, setting up the Smart-Fence location tracking feature, and monitoring energy consumption using the Energy Cost Estimator.
